RESUMO

In Ficus septica, the short-term control of isoprene production and, therefore, isoprene emission has been linked to the hormone balance between auxin (IAA) and jasmonic acid (JA). However, the relationship between long-term changes in isoprene emission and that of plant hormones remains unknown. This study tracked isoprene emissions from F. septica leaves, plant hormone concentrations and signalling gene expression, MEP pathway metabolite concentrations, and related enzyme gene expression for 1 year in the field to better understand the role of plant hormones and their long-term control. Seasonality of isoprenes was mainly driven by temperature- and light-dependent variations in substrate availability through the MEP route, as well as transcriptional and post-transcriptional control of isoprene synthase (IspS). Isoprene emissions are seasonally correlated with plant hormone levels. This was especially evident in the cytokinin profiles, which decreased in summer and increased in winter. Only 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-butenyl-4-diphosphate (HMBDP) exhibited a positive connection with cytokinins among the MEP metabolites examined, suggesting that HMBDP and its biosynthetic enzyme, HMBDP synthase (HDS), play a role in channelling of MEP pathway metabolites to cytokinin production. Thus, it is probable that cytokinins have potential feed-forward regulation of isoprene production. Under long-term natural conditions, the hormonal balance of IAA/JA-Ile was not associated with IspS transcripts or isoprene emissions. This study builds on prior work by revealing differences between short- and long-term hormonal modulation of isoprene emissions in the tropical tree F. septica.

RESUMO

The study was aimed to identify different environmental factors (selected organochlorine pesticides) affecting the river water of Satluj. River Sutlej is about 1400 kilometers long and its water is extensively used for irrigation in Punjab, located both in India and Pakistan, which was also a reason of dispute between both countries for its water share. The study area was divided into four zones, Sulemanki Zone, Islam Zone, Mailsi Syphone Zone and Panjnad Zone. Liquid Liquid Extraction (LLE) technique was used for the collected water samples followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) UV-Visible detector The current finding revealed that aldrin was not detected during summer period in water samples of SZ-1 (Sulemanki Barrage), SZ-2 and SZ-3 (Maisli Siphon) of the study area. Lindane and DDE were found more in the samples of sediments from the study area at SZ-4 ranging from 2.238-8.226 ppb and 4.234-6.876 ppb, respectively. Heaptachlor (in sediments) was found to be0.032-234 ppb only at SZ-4.Endosulfan concentrations in water (winter) at SZ-3 was 0.06 ppb and at SZ-4,it was 0.05 ppb; dieldrin in water (winter) at SZ-4 was 0.0314 ppb and heptachlor was detected at SZ-1 (0.0315 ppb) and SZ-2 (0.0310 ppb) in water during winter season, were reaching to the Maximum Concentrations Limits (MCL), while all other residues investigated were found below the MCLin all the compartments of the study area set by various agencies like WHO/FAO- Codex Alimenterious. Present findings revealed that although the organochlorine pesticides are banned for agricultural use in many countries, including Pakistan, their presence in various samples might be due to illegal use of these pesticides in the study area and its neighboring regions. The overall study area comprises of mainly urban, suburban and agricultural land being the largest cotton growing area of the country. There is a need to take serious steps to minimize water pollution caused by pesticides to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

RESUMO

Abstract Very little is known about the malacofauna in district Swat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, situated in the Northern part of Pakistan. The Swat valley possesses a variety of suitable environmental conditions, providing different types of habitats for both flora and fauna. Taken into consideration these points, the present study was conducted to explore the terrestrial snails diversity in agricultural and non-agricultural fields in the lower Swat valley. A total of 417 shells were collected from three sites: Kokarai, Kanju Township, and Deolai. Based on conchological features, three families: Bradybaenidae, Hygromiidae, and Zonitidae were identified using different terrestrial snail keys. In Kokarai and Deolai, shells of members of all the above-mentioned families were found from agricultural fields. In Kanju Township, shells of members of the family Bradybaenidae and Zonitidae were found. From these findings, it was concluded that district Swat possesses a significant malacofauna which was unexplored before and aided more to the existing literature on malacofauna. It also supports the idea that the agroecosystem is rich in species diversity. Further in-depth and extensive study is recommended to be carried out for a detailed taxonomy of the described terrestrial gastropod families.

In the developed countries, the use of OCPs (organochlorine pesticides) has been banned. However, in South Asia several of them are still in use. In Pakistan and India a constant addition of OCPs into the atmosphere has been indicated by various researchers. In this study levels of selected organochlorine pesticide residues were assessed in sediment and biota collected from four (4) water reservoirs (3 Barrages & 1 Siphon) on the River Satluj Pakistan, along 231 miles (372 km) of River stretch which was further divided into 12 sampling sites. It was aimed to find out the levels of organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) residues in sediments and from selected fish species (Labeo rohita, Wallagu attu, Cyprinus carpio) of the River Satluj Pakistan. The Organochlorine residues (seven pesticides) present in samples of sediments and biota were investigated through multi residue method, using Gas Chromatograph (GC-ECD).In the current study, the concentration of DDT, was investigated in Wallago attu (0.786-3.987 ppb), Labeo rohita (0.779-4.355 ppb) and Cyprinus carpio (1.234-5.654 ppb). DDE was also found in Cyprinus carpio (1.244-6.322 ppb), Wallag attu (0.877-4.221 ppb) and Labeo rohita (2.112-5.897 ppb). Aldrin was not observed in Labeo rohita and Wallago attu. Currently, lindane and DDE was found predominately high in the sediments of study area at SZ-4 (Panjnad Barrage) ranging (2.238-8.226 ppb) and (4.234-6.876 ppb), respectively. Heaptachlor was found only at SZ-4 (Panjnad Barrage) from the sediments with concentration ranging (0.032-234 ppb). In short all other residues investigated were found below the MCL (maximum concentration level) in all the compartments of the study area set by various agencies like WHO/FAO- Codex Alimenterious.

RESUMO

Introduction: The ulnar nerve palsy is a distressing injury, resulting in clawing of hand. The cause of clawing is due to paralysis of the interosseous muscles in the presence of functioning long extensor and long flexors of fingers. Various methods have been proposed to correct this deformity which include both static and dynamic procedures. In this study, we share our experience with flexor digitorum superficialis tendon transfer using Zancolli's modification for anti-claw correction. Materials and methods: It was a retrospective case series study. A record of 53 patients was included in the study, during a period between June 2013 to July 2017 with ulnar nerve palsy. The procedure done was flexor digitorum superficialis tendon transfer as dynamic anti-claw procedure. The follow-up period was three months. The outcomes assessed were grip strength by using sphygmomanometer and active range of motion of fingers assessed by fingers tips touching the palm. Result: Fifty-three patients were included out of them, there were fifty males and three females. The mean age was 28±10 years. All patients underwent flexor digitorum superficialis transfer for ulnar claw hand. A total of 84.9% patients have good grip strength and 83% showed good active range of motion. Conclusion: Flexor digitorum superficialis tendon transfer is found to be effective, reliable and reproducible technique in ulnar nerve palsy where patient need grip strength, good range of motion and acceptable hand function for daily routine work.

RESUMO

The experiment was carried out on mango cv. Dusehri to investigate the effect of N, P and K fertilizers on vegetative, reproductive growth, yield and fruit quality. Eight different fertilizer combinations such as T1 (control), T2 (N), T3 (P), T4 (K), T5 (NP), T6 (NK), T7 (PK) and T8 (NPK) were used. Individual or combine fertilizer application of N (1000 g), P (750 g) and K (750 g) were applied during growing season in February and August. All the treatments significantly influenced on vegetative growth, flowering, fruiting, yield and other physiochemical attributes of mango as compared to control. Least effect was observed with individual fertilizer application while combine fertilizer treatments enhanced most of the investigated parameters. Especially, qualitative traits showed nonsignificant differences between treated and untreated mango trees. However, among the different treatments T8 (NPK) showed significance for fruiting aspects such as maximum size of growth flushes (177.51 mm), total number of panicles/tree (845), total number of flowers/panicle (974), sex ratio (69.18%), fruit retention (13.85%), total number of fruits/tree (379), yield (82 kg/tree), fruit weight (197.5 g), pulp weight (135.5 g) and physiochemical parameters namely TSS (24.53), Vit. C (57.63 mg/100 mL) and total sugar (20.84%). In general, combine application of NPK (T8) were the most effective in enhancing fruiting aspects, yield, physiochemical characteristics as well as improved fruit quality of mango trees.

The present study reports the existence of cliff racer, Platyceps rhodorachis from the plains of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 10 specimens were captured during the field surveys from June to September, 2018 from different sites of Punjab. Platyceps rhodorachis was identify on the basis of morphology and confirmed through COI gene sequences. The obtained DNA sequences have shown reliable and exact species identification. Newly produced DNA sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis were submitted to GenBank and accession numbers were obtained (MK936174.1, MK941839.1 and MT790210.1). N-J tree based on COI sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis clearly separated as out-group with other members of family Colubridae based on p-distance. The intra-specific genetic variation ranges from 12% to 18%. The DNA sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis kashmirensis, Platyceps rhodorachis ladacensis, Platyceps ventromaculatus, Platyceps ventromaculatus bengalensis and Platyceps ventromaculatus indusai are not available at NCBI to validate their taxonomic positions. In our recommendations, a large scale molecular based identification of Pakistan's herpetofauna is required to report more new or subspecies from country.

RESUMO

Very little is known about the malacofauna in district Swat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, situated in the Northern part of Pakistan.

RESUMO

Impact-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major source of disability and mortality. Knowledge of brain strains during impact (accelerative) loading is critical for the overall management of TBI, including the development of injury thresholds, personal protective equipment, and validation of computational models. Despite these needs, the current understanding of brain strains in humans or humanlike surrogates is limited, especially for injury causing loading magnitudes. Toward this end, we measured full-field, in-plane (2D) strains in a brain simulant using the hemispherical head surrogate. The hemispherical head was mounted on the Hybrid-III neck and subjected to impact loading using a linear impactor system. The resulting head kinematics was measured using a triaxial accelerometer and angular rate sensors. Dynamic, 2D strains in a brain simulant were obtained using high-speed imaging and digital image correlation. Concurrent finite element (FE) simulations of the experiment were also performed to gain additional insights. The role of stiff membranes of the head was also studied using experiments. Our results suggest that rotational modes dominate the response of the brain simulant. The wave propagation in the brain simulant as a result of impact has a timescale of ~100 ms. We obtain peak strains of ~20%, ~40%, ~60% for peak rotational accelerations of ~838, ~5170, ~11,860 rad/s2, respectively. Further, peak strains in cortical regions are higher than subcortical regions by up to ~70%. The agreement between the experiments and FE simulations is reasonable in terms of spatiotemporal evolution of strain pattern and peak strain magnitudes. Experiments with the addition of falx and tentorium indicate significant strain concentration (up to 115%) in the brain simulant near the interface of falx or tentorium and brain simulant. Overall, this work provides important insights into the biomechanics of strain in the brain simulant during impact loading.

Especially, qualitative traits showed non-significant differences between treated and untreated mango trees.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by reduced circulating levels of thyroid hormones, T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (tetra-iodothyronine) which are produced by the thyroid gland, and increased levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) from the anterior pituitary (1). The cardiovascular system is among the main targets of thyroid hormones (2), therefore, most descriptive signs and symptoms of thyroid disorders are due to their effects on the cardiovascular system (3). Direct actions of altered thyroid hormones on heart and indirect impacts through inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Homocysteine (Hcy), are of great health concern. Particularly, CRP is a renowned biomarker to measure cardiovascular risks in both healthy as well as diseased subjects (4). Moreover, IL-6 is a chief mediator of tissue injury and infection, perpetuating lymphocyte infiltration in thyroid, manifesting its inflammation (5). Additionally, Hcy, having an atherogenic nature, stimulates inflammatory chemokine production and induces oxidative stress by lowering serum anti-oxidants (6). Hence, inflammatory markers may reveal the mechanism of disease progression, and can be used as a possible tool for predicting atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events (7). The aim of the present study was to assess the risk of cardiovascular dysfunctions in hypothyroid patients through predictive inflammatory markers.
